How Can I Stand Up For the Welfare of Animals in America?

We in the Calvin & Susie community have noticed one thing that unites people from all political parties: animals. No matter who you voted for, where you get your news from, or even if you abstain from politics altogether, the compassion you feel toward animals helps you find common ground with your fellow humans. At Calvin & Susie, we truly believe that animal welfare defies party lines. Just look at all the presidents, Democrat or Republican, who have shared the White House with beloved dogs and/or cats? (Or birds or goats or badgers…true story.) Whether you agreed with his politics or not, I bet most of you would have to admit that Bo and Sunny Obama are pretty darn cute, and that sweet Barney and Miss…

Being a Cat Parent: How Miss Peanut Became Maddie

Welcome to the third installment of our ongoing series of Calvin & Susie Blogs on “Being a Dog Parent” or “Being a Cat Parent”. In this series we’ll share how we, the Calvin & Susie family, learned how to care for our pets. We’ve made some missteps along the way, and we’re still learning, but as people who are passionate about animals, we want to share the good stuff we’ve learned so far.  *** By Brenda Kwon Within a few days after Miss Peanut came home with me, I knew I’d made a mistake. She was a scraggly orange kitten with a funny walk and an empty eye socket. When I met her, she’d made a beeline for me and head-bumped me forcefully, purring loudly. …

Pet Joint Supplements 101

Many of us see our darling dogs and cats as our “forever babies”. No matter how old they get, no matter how grey their muzzles turn, we continue to adoringly call them “pup” or “kitten”. I called my cranky senior cat, “Baby Girl” well into her teens – 70s in human years. My dog was “Hey pup!” all through his 15 spunky years. And while may of our senior pets remain young at heart, stiff, achey joints can be one of the first things to slow them down. Luckily there a lot of products out there that can not only slow the deterioration of their joints, but can even repair them to some degree. And when I say there are a lot, I mean there really are…

Read the first post, on how the Calvin & Susie Blogger learned to feed her cat, here.  This week’s post comes from our owner and founder, Alli.  —— Do you have a dog closet?  For me, it’s a full-height utility/storage closet in my laundry room. From top to bottom it’s…

Being a Cat Parent: How I Learned to Feed My Cat

Welcome to the first part of an ongoing series of Calvin & Susie Blogs on “Being a Cat Parent” or “Being a Dog Parent”. In this series we’ll share how we, the Calvin & Susie team, learned how to care for our pets. We made some missteps along the way, and we’re still learning, but as people who make pet care our profession, we want to share with you the good stuff we’ve learned so far. The first time I tried to feed my cat some actual healthy, wholesome cat food, I thought she’d never speak to me again. I was a young, broke graduate student in Los Angeles, and my cat Brandy was a cranky middle-aged tortoise shell girl who loved her cheap, “fish…
